Her father served in U.S. service in Italy. In the early 1990s, Adams began dancing professionally for the Boulder Dinner Theatre as well as the Country Dinner Playhouse. Later she was in Minnesota and at a local theater, she was selected to play a role in the mock documentary about beauty contests called Drop Dead Gorgeous. Following her debut on screen as a charming but snarky contestant, she relocated towards Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. She was in numerous acclaimed movies in the subsequent decade like Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) as well as Living It Up (a Martin and Lewis-film from 1954).
