O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. She made it to the top hundred round when judges applauded her singing ability. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed to the bottom three or bottom two and bottom two, respectively. Judges were shocked by this and advised the viewers to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she was never in the bottom three once ever again. After two more breathtaking performance on September 7 2005, the day that O'Neil and Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two contestants, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines would read O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the most youthful winner in the competition's time . O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
