O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. She made it to the top hundred round when judges applauded her singing ability. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed to the bottom three or bottom two and bottom two, respectively. Judges were shocked by this and advised the viewers to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills.
